1972 Topps #459 Rick Renick

About Rick Renick
Card #459 in the 1972 Topps set sits in the fourth series and shows Renick with Minnesota. He played 55 games for the Twins in 1972, 21 of them in the outfield and 6 at first base, and hit .172 with 4 home runs. His final major league game came on October 2.
Rick Renick, born Warren Richard Renick in London, Ohio, played third base, left field and shortstop across parts of five big league seasons, all with the Minnesota Twins, after signing with the club out of Ohio State in 1964. A right-handed hitter and thrower listed at 6 feet, 188 pounds, he reached the majors in 1968 and homered off Detroit ace Mickey Lolich in his first big league at-bat, a blow that helped Minnesota win the game. Minnesota sent him to the minors after the 1972 season, but he kept playing professionally through 1978, closing out his playing days in the Montreal Expos organization. He finished with a .221 career batting average over 276 games. Renick later coached and managed. He spent 13 seasons on major league staffs with Kansas City, Montreal, Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Florida, including time as Minnesota's third-base coach for the 1987 World Series champions. He was twice named American Association Manager of the Year as manager of the Nashville Sounds.
