1972 Topps #614 Ted Uhlaender

About Ted Uhlaender
Uhlaender hit .288 for Cleveland in 1971, playing left field after starting in center the year before. He had two home runs, 47 RBI and 500 at-bats. In late June he jumped the club over a lack of playing time. Cincinnati acquired him for Milt Wilcox on December 6, 1971, and his #614 card, in the fifth series, pictures him as a Red.
Ted Uhlaender was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who spent eight seasons in the majors with the Twins, Indians and Reds from 1965 to 1972. A Baylor product signed by Twins scout Buddy Hancken, he worked his way through the minors as a converted catcher before winning the Pacific Coast League batting title at Denver in 1965. He took over as Minnesota's starting center fielder in mid-1966 and held the job for four seasons. He led American League center fielders in fielding percentage in 1967 and hit .283, fifth in the league, in the pitcher-dominated 1968 season. Minnesota traded him to Cleveland after the 1969 season. He closed his career as a reserve outfielder with the pennant-winning 1972 Reds. He finished with a .263 career average and later coached and scouted in professional baseball. He is the father of Olympic skeleton competitor Katie Uhlaender.
