1972 Topps #613 Mike Ferraro

About Mike Ferraro
Topps #613, from the fifth print series of 1972, shows Ferraro with Milwaukee. That season he played 115 games at third base and one at shortstop. He collected 97 hits in 381 at-bats and scored 19 runs. The Brewers dealt him to the Minnesota Twins for Ken Reynolds on March 28, 1973, but he was promptly released.
Mike Ferraro was a third baseman from Kingston, New York, who starred in three sports at Kingston High School before signing with the Yankees as an amateur free agent. He reached the majors with New York in 1966 and 1968, was left unprotected in the 1968 expansion draft and taken by the Seattle Pilots, then was quickly traded to Baltimore, spending two seasons in the minors. A 1971 trade sent him back to the Pilots franchise, by then relocated to Milwaukee, where in 1972 he had his only season as a regular, playing 124 games. He batted .255 with two home runs and 29 RBI. His playing career ended after a brief 1974 comeback try with the Yankees. He then managed in the Yankees' farm system through 1978, winning pennants at the Class A, Double-A and Triple-A levels, and became the Yankees' third-base coach in 1979. He managed the Cleveland Indians in 1983, served as emergency manager of the Kansas City Royals in 1986, and won a World Series ring on Dick Howser's Royals coaching staff.
