1973 Topps #374 Darrell Evans

About Darrell Evans
Evans hit 41 home runs in 1973, was a reserve on the National League All-Star team behind Ron Santo, and led the majors with 125 walks. Atlanta became the first team with three 40-homer men, Evans, Davey Johnson (43) and Hank Aaron (40), though the Braves finished fifth in the NL West at 76-85. His #374 card came out in the third series.
Darrell Evans played 21 seasons in the majors, 1969 through 1989, as a third baseman and first baseman for the Braves, Giants and Tigers. A left-handed hitter who drew walks and hit for power, he finished with 414 home runs, 1,354 RBI and a .248 average, and Bill James called him the most underrated player in baseball history. He led the majors in walks twice, was a two-time All-Star, and won the 1984 World Series with Detroit. In 1985, at 38, he led the majors with 40 home runs, and he became the first player to hit 40 in both leagues. He was the Giants' captain after Willie McCovey retired in 1980. Evans managed and coached in the minor and independent leagues from 1990 to 2010. His nickname was Howdy, for a perceived resemblance to the television puppet Howdy Doody.
