1973 Topps #133 Dave Roberts

About Dave Roberts
Roberts appears on #133 in the second series with the Padres, and it is his rookie card, with the All-Star Rookie trophy cup beside the photo. The cup looked back on his 1972 debut season of .244 with five home runs and 33 RBI. On July 18 of that year he was playing third base when Steve Arlin lost a no-hit bid with one out to go, as Denny Doyle's single bounced over his head. Manager Don Zimmer had the infield in to guard against a bunt.
Dave Roberts was a third baseman, second baseman and later backup catcher who played parts of ten seasons between 1972 and 1982 for the San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies. The Padres made the Oregon product the number one pick of the June 1972 draft and signed him the next day. He was in a game that same day, becoming the sixth player to go straight to the majors after being drafted. His best year came in 1973, when he hit .286 with 21 home runs and 64 RBI. He spent all of 1976 in Hawaii and was a reserve in San Diego in 1977 and 1978. After a trade to Texas he played every position but shortstop and pitcher in 1979 and appeared in 101 games in 1980. He finished with Houston in 1981 and Philadelphia in 1982, retiring with a .239 average and 49 home runs. He managed Eugene in the Northwest League in 1984 and coached first base for Cleveland in 1987. The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1994.
