About Ivan Murrell

San Diego had chosen Murrell from Houston in the 1968 expansion draft. In 1972 he played five games for the Padres, with one hit in seven at-bats. He drove in one run and made a single appearance in the outfield. His 1973 Topps card, #409 in the fourth series, lists him with the Padres.

Ivan Murrell was a right-handed outfielder from Almirante, Panama, who played 10 major league seasons with Houston, San Diego and Atlanta. He collected 308 hits in 564 games, batting .236 with 33 home runs and 123 RBI. Murrell grew up in Costa Rica and studied mechanical aviation for two years before entering professional baseball. Houston scout Tony Pacheco signed him in 1963. After playing in Mexico, he joined the St. Lucie Legends of the Senior Professional Baseball Association in 1989, batting .272 with 5 home runs in 47 games. He also worked as a scout and minor league coach for Houston. Murrell died in Stuart, Florida, in 2006 at age 63.
