1973 Topps #57 Derrel Thomas

About Derrel Thomas
Thomas began 1973 as a utility man and ended up starting regularly at second base and shortstop, hitting .238 with 15 steals in 113 games. He was charged with 32 errors in 74 games at short, and was alleged to have thrown his bat at Phillies pitcher Ron Schueler during a brawl. Veteran Bobby Tolan roomed with him and mentored him. Card #57, from the first series, lists him with the Padres.
Derrel Thomas was a switch-hitting infielder-outfielder who played 15 seasons, 1971 to 1985, for Houston, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Montreal, California and Philadelphia. He hit .249 with 43 home runs in 1,597 games. He played every position except pitcher at least once, starting as a second baseman and shortstop and spending most of his Dodgers years in the outfield. A Los Angeles native out of Dorsey High School, he was the first overall pick of the January 1969 draft, taken by the Astros. He wore #30 in honor of his idol, Maury Wills. He was a member of the Dodgers team that won the 1981 World Series. After playing he was the first manager of the Boise Hawks in 1987, coached high school ball in Los Angeles, and later represented the Dodgers through their Legend Bureau.
