About Gary Ross

In 1972 Ross made 60 appearances for San Diego, all of them in relief, and went 4-3 with 3 saves. His 2.45 ERA came over 91 2/3 innings with 46 strikeouts. Card #112, a first-series issue, shows him with the Padres.

Gary Douglas Ross was a right-handed pitcher from McKeesport, Pennsylvania, who worked in the majors from 1968 to 1977. He broke in with the Chicago Cubs, and in April 1969 was part of a trade that sent him, Joe Niekro, and Frankie Libran to the expansion San Diego Padres for Dick Selma. Ross spent most of his career with San Diego through 1974 and worked chiefly in relief after his rookie season. He then closed out his playing days with the California Angels from 1975 to 1977, including a full season as a rotation starter in 1976. Over 283 career games he went 25-47 with a 3.92 ERA. He struck out 378 batters and saved seven games. He lost a club-record 11 consecutive decisions for the Padres in 1969, the expansion club's inaugural, 110-loss season.
