1973 Topps #651 Don Carrithers

About Don Carrithers
Card #651 sits in the fifth series of 1973 Topps, the high-number series, and carries a Giants uniform. After starting 14 games in 1972, Carrithers moved almost entirely to the bullpen in 1973, starting 3 of his 25 games and going 1-2 with a 4.81 ERA.
Don Carrithers was a right-handed pitcher who worked in the majors from 1970 to 1977 for the San Francisco Giants, Montreal Expos and Minnesota Twins. The Giants took him in the third round of the 1967 draft out of Lynwood High School in California, and he debuted at 20. He split his time between starting and relief, and injuries limited him to no more than 25 appearances in each season from 1971 through 1973. San Francisco traded him to Montreal for catcher John Boccabella just before 1974, and he did his best work there, going 5-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 1974 and 5-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 1975. In 1976 he threw 140 1/3 innings, a career high. The Expos sold him to Minnesota in spring 1977, and he finished 28-32 with a 4.45 ERA in 165 games.
