1973 Topps #361 Fran Healy

About Fran Healy
San Francisco is on the front of Healy's #361 card, from the third series, but he spent 1973 back in Kansas City with Jack McKeon, who had urged the Royals to reacquire him. McKeon made him the regular catcher on June 9, and he hit .300 with 6 home runs over the final 71 games. He finished at .276 in 95 games. On July 9 he charged the mound after Milwaukee's Jerry Bell threw three brushback pitches, and both were ejected. He threw out 31 of 69 runners.
Fran Healy was a 6-foot-5 right-handed catcher who played for the Royals, Giants and Yankees between 1969 and 1978, then became a broadcaster for the Yankees and, from 1984 to 2005, the Mets. Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, he signed with Cleveland scout Hoot Evers for a $40,000 bonus and was taken by the new Kansas City Royals in the 1968 expansion draft. He debuted on September 3, 1969, with two singles against Denny McLain. After a trade to San Francisco and two seasons as a backup, he came back to Kansas City in a trade for Greg Minton. He caught Steve Busby's no-hitters in 1973 and 1974, and his 138 games behind the plate in 1974 were more than any other big-league catcher's. The Royals traded him to the Yankees for Larry Gura in May 1976. As Thurman Munson's backup he became close to Reggie Jackson and mediated between Jackson and manager Billy Martin. He retired with a .250 average, 20 home runs and 141 RBIs, and moved from the field to the Yankees' booth in 1978.
