Pepitone collected 56 hits, 21 RBI and 23 runs for the Cubs in 1972. Topps placed his 1973 Cubs card, #580, in the fifth series, a high number. He played 3 games for Atlanta in 1973 before moving to the Yakult Atoms. In Japan he batted .163 with one home run and two RBI.
Joe Pepitone, born October 9, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York, was a left-handed first baseman and outfielder who broke in with the New York Yankees in 1962. He played through 1973 with the Astros, Cubs, and Braves, closing out that final season with the Yakult Atoms in Japan. A three-time All-Star (1963-1965) and three-time Gold Glove winner at first base (1965, 1966, 1969), he hit .258 across twelve seasons with 219 home runs and 721 RBIs. He hit seven career grand slams and placed among the American League's top 10 in home runs three times and in total bases and RBIs twice each. Signed by the Yankees out of Brooklyn's Manual Training High School for a $25,000 bonus in August 1958, he took over first base from Moose Skowron in 1963. Pepitone embraced New York nightlife and later wrote candidly about his career and personal struggles in the memoir Joe, You Coulda Made Us Proud. He died March 13, 2023, at 82.
