About Marty Pattin

In 1973 Pattin made 30 starts for Boston and went 15-15 with a 4.31 ERA over 219 1/3 innings. Fellow pitcher Bill Lee recalled that Pattin often threw up after the first inning of his Boston starts. The Red Sox traded him to Kansas City for Dick Drago on October 24. His fourth-series Topps card, #415, showed him with Boston.

Marty Pattin worked as both a starter and reliever during 13 major league seasons from 1968 through 1980 with the California Angels, Seattle Pilots, Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals. The right-hander made 224 starts in 475 appearances. He finished with 114 wins, a 3.62 ERA and 1,179 strikeouts. He earned an All-Star selection with Milwaukee in 1971. At Eastern Illinois University, he struck out 22 of the 27 batters he retired against Illinois State on April 23, 1965. The Angels selected him in the seventh round of that year's draft. Nicknamed Duck for his Donald Duck impersonation, Pattin later coached the University of Kansas baseball team from 1982 through 1987.
