1973 Topps #636 Rick Clark

About Rick Clark
By the time the 1973 set reached collectors, Clark's contract had been sold to the Philadelphia Phillies organization, where he pitched the season at Triple-A before leaving baseball. His #636 is a high number from the fifth series, and Topps still printed it with the Angels.
Rickey Clark was a right-handed pitcher who worked in the majors only for the California Angels, from 1967 to 1972. A Mount Clemens, Michigan native, he signed with his hometown Detroit Tigers out of Redford Union High School in 1965, and the Angels took him in the 1966 Rule 5 draft, which obliged them to carry him on the 25-man roster for all of 1967. He earned a rotation spot on merit: he won his debut on April 22 with four scoreless relief innings against Cleveland, and he finished 12-11 with a 2.59 ERA, the best among Angels starters. His only complete game that year was a two-hit shutout of the Washington Senators on September 8. The next year he went 1-11, and he spent most of 1969, all of 1970 and the early part of 1971 in the minor leagues. In 96 major league games, 70 of them starts, he went 19-32. His career ERA was 3.38, with 236 strikeouts in 431 2/3 innings.
