1973 Topps #531 Ron Woods

About Ron Woods
On September 17, 1973, Woods was the Expos' third pinch hitter of the ninth inning in the opener of a doubleheader against St. Louis. He worked a full count, fouled off seven pitches and lifted a popup near the mound that fell for a single, bringing home Felipe Alou with the winning run. His Expos card, #531, belonged to the fifth, high-number series of 1973 Topps.
Ron Woods was an outfielder from Hamilton, Ohio who reached the majors after five seasons in the Pittsburgh farm system stalled at Double-A. Detroit acquired his contract in 1966, and a strong 1968 campaign at Triple-A Toledo earned him a spot on the defending champion Tigers' 1969 roster. Traded to the New York Yankees that June for Tom Tresh, Woods settled into a regular outfield role, starting 147 of 192 games from June 1969 to June 1971. He then moved to the Montreal Expos, where he spent three and a half years. The arrival of veteran Willie Davis in 1974 pushed Woods into a part-time role. He closed out his six-year major league career with a .233 average and 26 home runs in 582 games, then finished his playing days in Japan with the Chunichi Dragons.
