1974 Topps #408 Charlie Hough

About Charlie Hough
Hough went 9-4 with a 3.75 ERA over 96 innings, all of it in relief. He then pitched in the postseason for the first time, working 2 1/3 innings against Pittsburgh in the NLCS and 2 innings with four strikeouts as Oakland beat Los Angeles in the World Series. His #408 card pictures him with the Dodgers.
Charlie Hough was a knuckleball pitcher who lasted 25 major-league seasons, from 1970 to 1994, with the Dodgers, Rangers, White Sox and Marlins. A Dodgers eighth-round pick in 1966, he learned the knuckleball from instructor Goldie Holt in the Arizona instructional league after the 1969 season. He ended his debut on August 12, 1970, by striking out Willie Stargell with the bases loaded. He worked mostly out of the Los Angeles bullpen from 1973 to 1979, saving 22 games in 1977, until Texas bought him in July 1980. Converted to starting in 1982, he made the 1986 All-Star team and left Texas holding franchise records for wins (139), strikeouts, innings and complete games. He started the first regular-season game in Florida Marlins history, April 5, 1993. He retired with 216 wins and 216 losses, a 3.75 ERA and 2,362 strikeouts, the only pitcher with 400 starts and 400 relief appearances.
