About Dan Fife

Three scoreless innings of relief at Cleveland Stadium on August 18, 1973 opened Fife's big-league career, a 5-0 Twins loss to the Indians. He made seven starts that season and went 3-2 with a 4.35 ERA. He pitched in four games for Minnesota in 1974, the last on April 24. Topps issued his rookie card, #421, with the Twins.

Danny Fife was a right-handed pitcher who appeared in 14 major league games for the Minnesota Twins in 1973 and 1974, then spent decades as a Michigan high school basketball coach. A three-sport athlete at Clarkston High School, he played three years of varsity basketball and baseball at the University of Michigan and captained the basketball team as a senior. In 1971 the Milwaukee Bucks drafted him in the NBA draft and the Detroit Tigers selected him in the baseball draft; he chose baseball and signed with Detroit. The Tigers traded him with cash to Minnesota in March 1973. He finished his major league career with a 5.43 ERA over 56 1/3 innings. A sore arm ended his baseball career after the 1975 season, and he returned to the University of Michigan as an assistant basketball coach. He coached the Clarkston varsity for 36 years and retired in 2018 as the third-winningest coach in Michigan high school basketball history. His teams won 29 league championships, 30 district titles and two state championships. He was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2019 and died on May 30, 2024, at 74.
