1974 Topps #422 Gonzalo Marquez

About Gonzalo Marquez
Marquez opened 1974 at Triple-A Wichita after one of the last Cubs cuts, and returned in early May when Adrian Garrett was sent down. He appeared in 11 games for Chicago, all as a pinch hitter, and went hitless in 11 at-bats. The Cubs sent him back to Wichita after his last major league game on June 5. His 1974 card is #422, a single-player card showing him with the Chicago Cubs.
Gonzalo Marquez was a left-handed first baseman and pinch hitter from Carupano, Venezuela, who played 76 major league games for the Oakland Athletics and Chicago Cubs from 1972 to 1974 and hit .235 with 1 home run and 10 RBI. His moment came in the 1972 postseason. Added to Oakland's roster after Darold Knowles broke a thumb, he singled in the 11th inning to win Game One of the ALCS against Detroit. He then went 3-for-5 off the bench in the World Series, including a pinch hit that started the winning rally in Game Four against Cincinnati. At home he played 20 winters in the Venezuelan league, nearly all of them with the Leones del Caracas, hitting .288, and won most valuable player honors in the 1970 Caribbean Series. Scout Felix Delgado gave him the nickname Hurricane, though Marquez never knew why. He died in a car accident in Venezuela in December 1984.
