1974 Topps #70 Dick Allen

About Dick Allen
Allen signed a three-year, $750,000 contract on February 27, 1973, making him the highest-paid player in baseball. A fractured fibula in June, suffered in a collision with Mike Epstein, limited him to 72 games; he batted .316 with 16 home runs. Card #70 shows him with the White Sox. Card #332 pairs him with Hank Aaron, who finished 1973 with 713 home runs, as the All-Stars first basemen.
Richard Anthony "Dick" Allen played first base, third base and the outfield during fifteen major league seasons (1963-1977) with the Phillies, Cardinals, Dodgers, White Sox and Athletics. Philadelphia signed him out of Wampum, Pennsylvania, in 1960 for a reported $70,000. Although the Phillies called him Richie, family and friends knew him as Dick, and he asked writers to use that name. He won the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year award and the 1972 American League Most Valuable Player award with Chicago. A seven-time All-Star, he led his league in slugging percentage three times. In Philadelphia he faced racist abuse and objects thrown from the stands; he wore a batting helmet while fielding and became known as Crash. Allen finished with a .292 average and 351 home runs in 1,749 games. His career slugging percentage was .534, with a 156 OPS+. He died in 2020 and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025.
