About Pat Kelly
Kelly batted .280 with 22 stolen bases and 77 runs scored for Chicago in 1973. Topps put his 1974 White Sox card at #46. Used chiefly as a designated hitter that season, he interrupted Steve Busby's attempt at consecutive no-hitters with a sixth-inning single on June 24. Kelly finished at .281 with 18 steals in 122 games.
Pat Kelly was a left-handed outfielder who played 15 major league seasons with the Twins, Royals, White Sox, Orioles and Indians. He finished with 1,147 hits, a .264 average and 250 stolen bases. His older brother Leroy became a Pro Football Hall of Fame running back for the Cleveland Browns. At Philadelphia's Simon Gratz High School, Pat played baseball and football and won the 1962 Cliveden Award as the city's outstanding prep athlete. Minnesota signed him that September. In Orlando the following year, he and his Black teammates had to lodge separately from their white teammates. Kelly became an All-Star with Chicago in 1973 and played in Baltimore's 1979 World Series. After becoming a born-again Christian in 1975, he became an ordained minister and served ministries in Baltimore and Cleveland.
