Jerry Hairston was a switch-hitting outfielder who played 14 major league seasons between 1973 and 1989, nearly all with the Chicago White Sox, plus part of 1977 with Pittsburgh. He hit .258 with 30 home runs in 859 games and became a pinch-hitting specialist. On April 15, 1983, he broke up Milt Wilcox's perfect game for Detroit with a two-out single in the ninth inning. That year he played in the ALCS, which Baltimore won over Chicago three games to one. He also played three seasons in Mexico, from 1978 to 1980, with Durango, won a Mexican League batting title and twice represented Mexican teams at the Caribbean Series. He is the son of Sam Hairston and brother of Johnny Hairston, both major leaguers, and the father of Jerry Jr. and Scott Hairston.
