1974 Topps #401 Elliott Maddox

About Elliott Maddox
The Yankees bought Maddox from Texas for $40,000 in March 1974. He hit .174 in April and .371 in May, and in late May manager Bill Virdon made him the regular center fielder and moved Bobby Murcer to right, and Maddox finished the year with 141 hits. The #401 card, though, still lists him with the Rangers, the club that had just sold him.
Elliott Maddox was a right-handed outfielder and third baseman who played 11 major league seasons, 1970 to 1980, for the Tigers, Senators, Rangers, Yankees, Orioles and Mets. He was a first-round pick of Detroit in the 1968 secondary draft after hitting .467 for Michigan, and in September 1970 he returned to Michigan for his senior year while still playing for the Tigers 40 miles away. His glove was the calling card: Ted Williams called him perhaps the best defensive center fielder in the American League, and in 1974 he led AL center fielders in assists and double plays. That same year he hit .303 for the Yankees and scored a career-high 75 runs. A fall on the wet Shea Stadium outfield on June 13, 1975 damaged his knee and led to two operations, and he later sued over the injury, losing at New York's highest court in 1985. He finished with a .261 average over 1,029 games. After baseball he became an investment banker, later a Yankees hitting instructor in 1990 and 1991, and in 2004 was inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
