About Expos Field Leaders (Gene Mauch / Larry Doby / Jerry Zimmerman / Dave Bristol / Cal McLish)
Mauch recorded his 1,000th major league managerial win when Montreal beat San Francisco on April 23, 1974. His 1974 Topps #531 pairs him with coaches Larry Doby, Jerry Zimmerman, Dave Bristol and Cal McLish. The Expos finished 79-82 that season, fourth in the National League East. Gene Mauch played for six major league clubs before managing the Phillies, Expos, Twins and Angels over 26 seasons. His teams emphasized bunting, advancing runners, speed and defense, and he finished with 1,902 managerial wins.
Doby rejoined the Cleveland Indians in 1974 as first-base coach under manager Ken Aspromonte. Cleveland then named Frank Robinson player-manager, the first Black manager in the majors, and Doby returned to work for the Expos. Topps still printed him with Montreal on #531, a manager-and-coaches card he shares with Gene Mauch, Jerry Zimmerman, Dave Bristol and Cal McLish. Center fielder who became the American League's first Black player when he debuted for Cleveland on July 5, 1947. A seven-time All-Star who hit 253 home runs, he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1998.
Gene Mauch hired Jerry Zimmerman as the Expos' first-ever bullpen coach in March 1969, and he was still in that job on the 1973 staff. Montreal went 79-83 that year, fourth in the National League East and 3 1/2 games behind the Mets. Larry Doby coached first base and hitting, Dave Bristol third base and Cal McLish pitching. Zimmerman shares #531, the Expos manager-and-coaches card, with Mauch, Doby, Bristol and McLish. Jerry Zimmerman was a sure-handed catcher who played eight big-league seasons for Cincinnati and Minnesota from 1961 to 1968, then spent a dozen years on Gene Mauch's coaching staffs and umpired an inning of a 1978 major league game.
Dave Bristol spent 1973 as third base coach of the Montreal Expos, a post he held through 1975. His 1972 Milwaukee Brewers managing stint had ended at 10-20 in 30 games, and he returned to managing with Atlanta in 1976. Card #531 in the 1974 Topps manager subset is a shared Expos card that lists Gene Mauch, Larry Doby, Jerry Zimmerman, Bristol and Cal McLish. A minor league infielder who became a playing manager at age 24, Bristol managed the Cincinnati Reds from mid-1966 through 1969, the seasons just before the club became the Big Red Machine.
McLish was still Montreal's pitching coach in 1974. He shares Topps #531 with Gene Mauch, Larry Doby, Jerry Zimmerman and Dave Bristol, a five-man card in the manager subset. The Expos fired Mauch and McLish after the 1975 season, and McLish was soon hired to coach the Milwaukee Brewers. Cal McLish pitched 15 major-league seasons for seven clubs, won 19 games for Cleveland in 1959 and saved that summer's second All-Star Game, then coached big-league pitchers from 1965 to 1982.
