1974 Topps #654 Jesus Alou

About Jesus Alou
Jesus Alou was traded from Houston to Oakland on July 31, 1973, which is why #654 shows him with the Athletics. He hit .282 in 64 games across the two clubs that year. In 1974 he batted .268 in 96 games for Oakland, which beat the Dodgers in the World Series. The card was printed twice, one version with his position on the front and one without.
Jesus Alou was a Dominican outfielder who played 15 major league seasons, the youngest of three baseball-playing brothers alongside Felipe and Matty Alou. Signed by the San Francisco Giants as a teenager out of Bajos de Haina, he worked his way up through the minors with strong batting averages and reached the majors in September 1963, joining a Giants outfield that briefly included all three brothers at once. He was a free swinger who struck out only 267 times in 4,345 career at-bats, a knack he credited to a childhood backyard game with his brothers in which a batter kept hitting as long as he did not strike out. After six years in San Francisco he moved on to the Houston Astros, then the Oakland Athletics, where he was a bench player on two World Series champions, before finishing his career with the New York Mets and a return to Houston. He survived a frightening on-field collision in 1969 that left him briefly unconscious. After retiring he spent decades working in scouting and player development for the Expos, Marlins and Red Sox.
