1974 Topps #617 Ted Ford

About Ted Ford
Ford opened 1974 at Oklahoma City, and on April 24 Cleveland traded him back to Texas for pitcher Charlie Hudson. Told he would stay in the minors, he decided to go home, but was talked into joining the Hawaii Islanders of the Pacific Coast League, where he hit .309 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI. His #617 card is issued with the Cleveland Indians.
Ted Ford was a right-handed outfielder with a strong throwing arm who played for the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers from 1970 to 1973. A Vineland, New Jersey, native, he was the Indians' first-round pick, 11th overall, in the January 1966 draft. Army service cost him 1968 and 1969, much of it spent as a cook at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He made his debut on April 7, 1970, going 0-for-2 with a walk against Baltimore's Dave McNally, and finished with 240 major league games, a .219 average and 17 home runs. In 1972 in Texas he led the American League with 10 assists from right field. After his major league time ended he played eight seasons in the Mexican League, through 1982, then coached young players in New Jersey and Texas, including at Huston-Tillotson University. He died in Austin on September 15, 2025.
