About Tom Ragland

A November 30, 1972 trade sent Ragland from Texas to Cleveland for pitcher Vince Colbert, and 1973 gave him 47 hits and 12 RBI in 67 games. After the season his contract was sold to the Houston Astros organization, though Topps still listed him with the Indians on his 1974 card, #441.

Tom Ragland was a second baseman who played 102 major league games for the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers in 1971 and 1972 and the Cleveland Indians in 1973. Born in Talladega, Alabama, he was raised in Detroit and starred at Northern High School, then was taken by Washington in the 15th round of the first amateur draft in 1965. It took six years of minor league seasons to reach the Senators, with a stop at Triple-A Denver along the way. He debuted on Opening Day, April 5, 1971, and in the last game the Senators ever played, on September 30, he scored the final run in Washington before the game was forfeited to the Yankees. His fullest season was 1973 with Cleveland, when he started 50 games at second base and batted .257. He finished with 61 hits and a .231 average. After his career ended at Denver in 1974, he worked at a Detroit-area milk plant and scouted for the Rangers. He is a member of the Detroit High School Hall of Fame.
