1976 Topps #293 Bill Castro

About Bill Castro
Gout delayed Castro's 1976 season, and a pulled hamstring later sent him to the disabled list until June 9. On July 11 he pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings against Texas, earning a win when Hank Aaron homered in the tenth. Castro finished 4-6 with a 3.45 ERA and 8 saves. His Brewers card, 1976 Topps #293, was his rookie card.
Bill Castro was a Dominican right-handed reliever who pitched ten major league seasons (1974-1983), seven of them with the Milwaukee Brewers, and later became a long-serving Brewers coach. Signed by the Brewers on October 29, 1970 for an $8,000 bonus that he believed was the largest then paid to a Dominican prospect, he worked mainly with a sinker and slider and induced many double-play grounders. He averaged 3.3 strikeouts per nine innings but kept walks low. After Milwaukee he pitched for the Yankees in 1981 and the Royals in 1982 and 1983, finishing 31-26 with a 3.33 ERA and 45 saves. He then joined the Brewers staff as bullpen coach in 1992 and was named pitching coach in November 2008 for the 2009 season, becoming the majors' first full-time pitching coach from the Dominican Republic. In winter ball he pitched for Aguilas Cibaenas, which won the Dominican League title in 1974-75, 1977-78 and 1978-79.
