About Doyle Alexander

The 1975 Orioles got an 8-8 record and a 3.04 ERA from Alexander, who also saved one game. He started 11 of his 32 appearances that season and struck out 46. In 1976 he finished 13-9 with a 3.36 ERA over 201 innings. He struck out 58 and threw three shutouts, and his 10-5 record for the Yankees helped them win the American League East. Topps #638 shows him with Baltimore.

Doyle Alexander was born September 4, 1950, in Cordova, Alabama, attended Woodlawn High School in Birmingham and Jefferson College in Missouri, and was drafted by the Dodgers in the ninth round in 1968. He debuted with Los Angeles in 1971 and that December went to Baltimore in the trade that sent Frank Robinson to the Dodgers. Baltimore traded him to the Yankees on June 15, 1976, and he started Game 1 of that year's World Series. He then pitched for Texas, Atlanta, San Francisco, the Yankees again and Toronto, where he won 17 games in both 1984 and 1985. In 1987 Atlanta sent him to Detroit for minor leaguer John Smoltz, and he went 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA for the Tigers. He made his only All-Star team in 1988 and retired after 1989 with a 194-174 record and a 3.76 ERA.
