1976 Topps #508 Duane Kuiper

About Duane Kuiper
Cleveland traded Jack Brohamer to the White Sox after the 1975 season, clearing second base for Kuiper, who had hit .292 in 90 games following a May recall from Oklahoma City. In 1976 he played 135 games and batted .263 with 37 RBI. He also led American League second basemen with a .987 fielding percentage, and manager Frank Robinson wrote him into the lineup at first base five times without telling him in advance. Topps #508, his rookie card, shows him with the Indians.
Duane Kuiper was a left-handed-hitting second baseman who played twelve seasons, 1974 through 1985, eight with the Cleveland Indians and four with the San Francisco Giants, and then became the Giants' television voice. Drafted five times between 1968 and 1971 without signing, he went to Cleveland as a first-round pick in the January 1972 secondary draft and reached the majors in September 1974 after hitting .310 at Oklahoma City. Defense was his strength; manager Frank Robinson called him the best second baseman in the league and once said he stood up in the dugout to applaud plays Kuiper made. He served as Indians team captain. A knee injury in 1980 cost him almost the whole season. The Giants acquired him for pitcher Ed Whitson in November 1981, and in 1982, backing up Joe Morgan, he set a then-club record with 14 pinch hits. He retired in 1985 with a .271 average and one home run in 3,379 at-bats. He hosted a KNBR radio show from 1982, joined the Giants' broadcast booth in 1986, spent 1993 with the expansion Colorado Rockies and returned to San Francisco in 1994. Paired with Mike Krukow, he made the call on the final out of the 2010 World Series and on Matt Cain's 2012 perfect game, and had won seven Emmy Awards by 2014.
