About Jack Pierce
Pierce's rookie card, #162, has him with the Tigers, the club for which he committed 13 errors at first base in 1975, third most among American League first basemen. He drove in 22 runs that season, and Danny Meyer took over as the starter in early August. In 1976 he was in Mexico, where he hit .331 for Puebla and led the league with 109 RBI.
Jack Pierce was a left-handed-hitting first baseman who reached the majors in parts of three seasons, 1973 to 1975, with the Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers, and became a power hitter in Mexico. Born in Laurel, Mississippi, he went to San Jose High School and San Jose City College, and the Braves drafted him in 1969. He hit 20 home runs at Kinston in 1971 and 23 at Savannah in 1972. Atlanta gave him 11 games in 1973 and nine at-bats in 1974. In 1975 Detroit acquired him for Reggie Sanders and made him its starting first baseman after Nate Colbert was sold; he hit .235 with eight home runs in 53 games. He spent 1977 with the Nankai Hawks in Japan. In Mexico he won three home run titles, set a league record with 54 for Leon in 1986, and finished with 294 Mexican League homers. He was elected to the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.
