About John Knox

Knox played 43 games in 1975, 23 at second base, and hit .267 with a .344 on-base percentage; his last major-league game came September 26. Topps carried him into 1976 as Tigers card #218. That spring he refused at first to report to the minors, saying he had never played more than two games in a row in Detroit, and he began the season at Evansville.

John Knox was a left-handed-hitting second baseman who played four seasons for the Detroit Tigers, 1972 through 1975, appearing in 124 games. He grew up in Pittsburgh and Columbus, attended Upper Arlington High School, and hit .370 as a senior at Bowling Green State, earning All-MAC first-team and third-team All-America honors in 1970. Detroit drafted him in the eighth round that year, and he moved up through Batavia, Montgomery and Toledo before debuting August 1, 1972. His fullest big-league season was 1974, with 55 games, 33 of them at second base, and a .307 average. He hit .274 for his career with 60 hits and 7 stolen bases, and appeared in the Tigers' 1972 ALCS loss to Oakland. He spent 1976 in the minors and was traded to the Reds that season. He later worked for Alco Aluminum in Toledo and was inducted into the Bowling Green Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977.
