1976 Topps #138 Lerrin LaGrow

About Lerrin LaGrow
In 1975 LaGrow went 7-14 with a 4.38 ERA and two shutouts for a Tigers club that lost 102 games, including a franchise-record 19 in a row. Card #138 lists him with Detroit, which sold his contract to the Cardinals on April 2, 1976, for a reported 25,000 dollars. He went 6-10 with a 4.14 ERA in 25 starts at Triple-A Tulsa, then posted a 1.48 ERA in 24 1/3 innings over 8 games for St. Louis in September.
Lerrin LaGrow was a 6-foot-5 right-hander who pitched in the majors from 1970 to 1980 for the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. A Phoenix native, he won 14 games for Arizona State's 1969 College World Series champions and was a sixth-round Tigers pick that June. He was the Southern League's Player of the Year in 1970. Detroit made him a starter in 1974 and 1975, and after that he worked almost entirely out of the bullpen, becoming the White Sox closer in 1977 with 25 saves, third best in the American League. He was also the target of the Bert Campaneris bat throw in the 1972 ALCS. He finished 34-55 with a 4.11 ERA, 309 games and 54 saves.
