1976 Topps #229 Jerry Remy

About Jerry Remy
Remy debuted on April 7, 1975, singling off Kansas City's Steve Busby in his first at-bat, and Busby promptly picked him off first base. Manager Dick Williams warned him that a repeat would send him back to Salt Lake City. He finished his rookie year at .258 with 34 stolen bases while being caught a league-leading 21 times. Card #229 is his rookie card and carries the Topps All-Star Rookie trophy.
Jerry Remy was a left-handed-hitting second baseman who played ten seasons, three with the California Angels from 1975 to 1977 and seven with the Boston Red Sox from 1978 to 1984. Born in Fall River and raised in Somerset, Massachusetts, he was an eighth-round pick of the Angels in the 1971 secondary draft, and coach Kenny Myers talked minor-league management out of cutting him in 1971. He led the Texas League in batting at .338 in 1974. He stole 208 bases in the majors, including 30 or more in each of his first four seasons, a first in American League history. He hit .313 in 63 games in 1980 before reinjuring his knee in Milwaukee on July 10. On September 3, 1981, he went 6-for-10 in a 20-inning game against Seattle, the longest game played at Fenway Park. That December he signed a five-year, $2.8 million contract with Boston, and in 1982 he played a career-high 155 games. Knee injuries ended his career after 30 games in 1984, and he retired with a .275 average and 1,226 hits. From 1988 he was the color commentator on NESN's Red Sox telecasts until his death from lung cancer on October 30, 2021. He entered the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2017.
