1976 Topps #85 Mickey Rivers

About Mickey Rivers
Rivers appears twice in the set, both times as an Angel, even though the Yankees had acquired him with Ed Figueroa for Bobby Bonds on December 11, 1975. #85 is his own card. #198 is a League Leaders card shared with Claudell Washington, printed with Oakland, and Amos Otis, printed with Kansas City. In 1975 he led the league with 70 steals and collected 175 hits in 155 games.
Mickey Rivers was a left-handed center fielder and leadoff hitter who played 15 seasons, 1970 to 1984, for the Angels, Yankees and Rangers. A Miami native who attended Miami Dade Community College, he was known as Mick the Quick and was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves. He retired with a .295 average, 1,660 hits and 267 steals. When Reggie Jackson told a reporter he had an IQ of 160, Rivers answered, "Out of what, a thousand?" His final major league game came on September 30, 1984, when the Rangers lost 1-0 to Mike Witt's perfect game for the Angels. After baseball he trained racehorses in his native Florida. In 2007 he was honored with teammates from the 1977 champions at the Yankees' Old Timers Game.
