1976 Topps #505 Mark Belanger

About Mark Belanger
In 1975 Belanger played 152 games at shortstop for Baltimore and led the American League with 23 sacrifices. He batted .226 with three home runs and 27 RBI. That year he and his wife Dee suggested playing John Denver's 'Thank God I'm a Country Boy' during the seventh-inning stretch. His 1976 Orioles card is #505.
Mark Belanger spent 17 seasons with Baltimore and one with the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning eight Gold Gloves at shortstop and a World Series championship with the 1970 Orioles. His tall, narrow frame earned him the nickname The Blade. Baltimore signed him out of Pittsfield High School in 1962 for $35,000, and he reached the majors as a pinch-runner on August 7, 1965. Across 18 seasons he collected 1,316 hits and batted .228. He served as the Orioles' player representative, took part in the 1981 strike negotiations and worked for the players' association after retiring. Baltimore inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 1983.
