1976 Topps #393 Paul Mitchell

About Paul Mitchell
Mitchell's rookie card is #393 in the 1976 set, and it pictures him with Baltimore. On April 2, 1976, the Orioles included him with Mike Torrez and Don Baylor in the trade that brought Reggie Jackson and Ken Holtzman from Oakland, and he went 9-7 for the A's that season.
Paul Mitchell was a right-handed starting pitcher who worked six major league seasons, 1975 to 1980, for the Baltimore Orioles, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers. A Worcester, Massachusetts native, he pitched at Old Dominion University and for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League. Falmouth won the league title in each of his three summers there, and he was named the league's outstanding pitcher in 1969 and 1970. Baltimore took him seventh overall in the secondary phase of the 1971 draft. He debuted on July 1, 1975, at Fenway Park and finished 3-0 with a 3.63 ERA. His major league line was 32-39 with a 4.45 ERA over 125 games and 621 1/3 innings. He handled 114 chances in the field without an error, a perfect 1.000 career fielding percentage that ties the record for pitchers with at least 500 innings. He was inducted into the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame in 2002.
