About Randy Tate

Tate's #549 is a rookie card, printed with the New York Mets. In 1975 he started 23 of his 26 games and finished 5-13. His ERA was 4.45, and he struck out 99 batters in 137 2/3 innings. Two of his starts were complete games.

Randy Tate was a right-handed starter whose entire major league career was the 1975 season with the New York Mets. He spent that summer in the Mets rotation. On August 4, 1975, at Shea Stadium, he carried a no-hitter against the Montreal Expos through seven and a third innings and still lost the game; manager Yogi Berra was fired the next day. He also went hitless in 41 at-bats, the most by any player without a hit in major league history. The Mets sent him to Tidewater, their Triple-A club, for 1976, and he did not pitch in the majors again. After that season he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates and worked in their Triple-A system until a torn rotator cuff ended his career.
