1976 Topps #607 Rich Hinton

About Rich Hinton
After 1974 and the first half of 1975 in the minors, Hinton returned to Chicago when Terry Forster hurt his arm. He pitched 15 games in relief and posted a 4.82 ERA over 37 1/3 innings. The White Sox traded him and Jeff Sovern to Cincinnati for Clay Carroll on December 12, 1975, yet card #607 still shows him with Chicago. He pitched 12 games for the Reds in 1976 and finished with a 7.64 ERA.
Rich Hinton was a left-handed pitcher from Tucson who worked parts of six major league seasons between 1971 and 1979, going 9-17 with a 4.87 ERA in 116 games. He starred at the University of Arizona, going 32-8 over three seasons, and was drafted five times in five years before signing with the White Sox in the third round of the 1969 secondary draft. Chicago was the club he kept returning to, in three separate stints. His career ran through the Yankees, Rangers, Reds and Mariners, and in 1977 he pitched in Mexico City, where he went 14-8. His best year came in 1978, when he pitched 29 games for the White Sox with a 4.02 ERA and both of his career complete games. On June 3 of that season he recorded his first major league save. He died in 2025 at 78.
