1976 Topps #316 Robin Yount

About Robin Yount
Yount opened 1976 unsigned. After arbitrator Peter Seitz ruled that players could become free agents by playing out their options, he threatened to play the season without a contract, though he reported to spring training on time and signed a two-year deal in late April. He played all but three innings of the year and made 13 fewer errors than in 1975. A slump in July and August dropped him from the .280s to a .252 finish. Topps carried him as a Brewer on #316 in its 1976 set.
Robin Yount played all 20 of his major league seasons for the Milwaukee Brewers, first as a shortstop and then, after a shoulder problem forced him to the outfield in 1985, as a center fielder. Milwaukee drafted him third overall in 1973, one pick ahead of Dave Winfield, and he debuted on April 5, 1974, as the majors' youngest player, dubbed "the Kid" as a teenage regular. In 1982 he led the American League with 210 hits and won a Gold Glove and the first of his two Most Valuable Player awards. In that fall's World Series he hit .414 with 6 RBI, but the Brewers lost to St. Louis in seven games. His 1989 MVP came as an outfielder, which made him the third player to win the award at two positions, after Hank Greenberg and Stan Musial. On September 9, 1992, he became the 17th player to collect 3,000 hits. He retired after 1993 with 3,142 hits, 251 home runs and a .285 average. The Brewers retired his number 19 the next year. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1999, his first year of eligibility.
