1976 Topps #279 Roy Howell

About Roy Howell
Howell's rookie card is #279, with the Rangers, and it followed a first full year at third in which he hit .251 with 10 home runs and 51 RBI in 125 games. The 1976 season brought 140 games, 8 homers and a league-high 28 errors at third. On August 7 he broke up Steve Luebber's no-hitter with a two-out single in the ninth.
Roy Howell was a left-handed-hitting third baseman who played 11 major league seasons, 1974 to 1984, for the Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers. Texas took him fourth overall in the 1972 draft out of Lompoc High School in California, and he reached the majors in September 1974 under Billy Martin. He became the Blue Jays' everyday third baseman in 1977 and made the 1978 American League All-Star team. He signed with Milwaukee as a free agent in December 1980 and played in the 1981 division series and the 1982 pennant and World Series run. He finished with a .261 average, 80 home runs and 454 RBI in 1112 games. A stranger shot him in the left arm on the last day of deer season in the offseason after he signed with Texas, and the nickname Target stuck for the rest of his career. He later managed in the Atlantic League and, in 2014, the Tacoma Rainiers.
