1976 Topps #280 Burt Hooton

About Burt Hooton
Hooton credited a 20-minute session with hypnotist Arthur Ellen for his 1975 turnaround, which produced a 6-0 record and 1.07 ERA as August NL Pitcher of the Month and a 5-0 September. The winning streak ended in his first start of 1976, an 8-5 loss to the Padres, and he finished 11-15 with a 3.26 ERA. His #280 card pictures him with the Dodgers.
Burt Hooton was a right-handed starter who pitched 15 seasons for the Cubs, Dodgers and Rangers, relying on a knuckle-curve he developed as a 14-year-old in Corpus Christi. A three-time All-American at the University of Texas, he went 35-3 for the Longhorns and was the second pick of the 1971 secondary draft, signing for $50,000. Chicago traded him to Los Angeles in May 1975, and he won his last 12 decisions that year, a Dodgers record. He won 19 games with a 2.71 ERA in 1978 and finished second to Gaylord Perry for the Cy Young Award. In 1981 he made his only All-Star team, posted a career-best 2.28 ERA and was NLCS MVP as the Dodgers won the World Series. He finished at 151-136 with a 3.38 ERA, then spent decades as a pitching coach, including with the Astros from 2000 to 2004.
