1976 Topps #260 Steve Busby

About Steve Busby
Busby went 3-3 with a 4.40 ERA in 1976 as his control problems returned. Convalescing in the hospital that year, he heard roommate Paul Splittorff confess that he had made the 1972 crack about umpire John Rice's tailor that got Jerry May ejected and wiped out a Busby grand slam. His 1976 Topps card, #260, lists him with the Royals. It followed his 1975 season of 18-12 with a 3.08 ERA.
Steve Busby was a right-handed starter who spent his entire eight-year career, 1972 to 1980, with the Kansas City Royals. A USC pitcher who went 11-2 with a 1.92 ERA in 1971, he was the Royals' second-round pick that June. He threw the first no-hitter in club history in 1973 and a second in 1974, becoming the first pitcher to throw no-hitters in his first two full seasons, and was an All-Star in 1974 and 1975. He was diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff in 1976, an injury that at the time ended a pitcher's career, and became the first baseball player to undergo rotator cuff surgery. He finished 70-54 with a 3.72 ERA and 659 strikeouts. He was among the first two players elected to the Royals Hall of Fame, entered the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and later broadcast for the Texas Rangers.
