1976 Topps #561 Tom Carroll

About Tom Carroll
Carroll had made seven starts and pitched 47 innings for Cincinnati in 1975. His teammates voted him a three-quarter World Series share after the Reds beat Boston in the 1975 Series. Back at Triple-A Indianapolis in 1976, he went 9-12 with a 5.38 ERA and threw a one-hit shutout against Tulsa on June 26. His 1976 Topps card, #561, listed him with the Reds.
Tom Carroll was a tall right-handed pitcher who worked for the Cincinnati Reds in 1974 and 1975. The Reds took him in the sixth round of the 1970 draft out of North Allegheny High School in Pittsburgh, and he won 18 games with a 2.39 ERA for Tampa in the Florida State League in 1971. He reached Triple-A Indianapolis in 1973 and threw a no-hitter against Omaha on May 24, 1974. Called up that July, he debuted on July 7, 1974, at Riverfront Stadium against St. Louis, working seven innings for the win, and won his first four decisions as the fifth starter behind Don Gullett, Clay Kirby, Jack Billingham and Fred Norman. He finished 1974 at 4-3 with a 3.68 ERA. In 1975 he came up again when Gullett broke his thumb and went 4-1 with a 4.98 ERA in 12 games. His last major-league win was a 1-0 decision over the Dodgers on August 2, 1975. Arm trouble ended his career: he pitched at Indianapolis in 1976, was traded to Pittsburgh, was taken by Montreal in the Rule V draft, and left baseball in 1977. He later earned degrees at Georgetown and taught there.
