1976 Topps #414 Wayne Garland

About Wayne Garland
Garland began 1976 in relief, going 3-0 with a 1.95 ERA in six weeks, and made his first start May 28 at Fenway Park. After the June 15 Yankees trade he stayed in the rotation and stood 10-2 at the end of July. He turned down a $40,000 offer from the Orioles that season and won his 20th on September 28 in an 11-inning complete game against Milwaukee, decided by Bobby Grich's two-run homer. Card #414 shows him with the Orioles.
Wayne Garland was a right-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors, 1973 to 1981, with the Baltimore Orioles and the Cleveland Indians, finishing 55-66 with a 3.89 ERA. A Nashville native, he was drafted by the Pirates in 1968 and the Cardinals in 1969 without signing before the Orioles took him in the 1969 secondary draft. He won 20 games and lost seven for Baltimore in 1976, then became one of the first free agents of the Seitz era and signed with the Indians. He turned to the knuckleball late in his career to work around shoulder injuries and was released after the 1981 season. He later coached in the minors, including as pitching coach for the Nashville Sounds and in the Pirates organization.
