1977 Topps #24 Carl Morton

About Carl Morton
Morton's 1977 Topps #24 shows him with the Atlanta Braves after a 4-9, 4.17 ERA season in 1976. Atlanta sent him to Texas on December 9, 1976, in a five-for-one trade that also included $200,000 and brought Jeff Burroughs to the Braves. The Rangers released him on April 1, 1977, and Philadelphia signed him later that season but released him on September 14 without a game played.
Carl Wendle Morton was a right-handed pitcher who spent eight seasons in the majors with the Montreal Expos and Atlanta Braves. Born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he started his pro career as an outfielder in the Atlanta organization before converting to the mound, then was taken by Montreal in the 1968 expansion draft. In the Expos' fourth game as a franchise in 1969, Morton pitched nine scoreless innings, though the club fell 1-0 in the 12th. In 1970 he went 18-11 with a 3.60 ERA for a last-place Montreal team and was named National League Rookie of the Year over Bernie Carbo, Larry Bowa and Cesar Cedeno, also picking up The Sporting News' rookie honor. Traded to Atlanta for Pat Jarvis in 1973, he posted three straight double-digit win seasons. Over his career he batted .156 with seven home runs. Morton finished with an 87-92 record, a 3.73 ERA and 650 strikeouts; his last major league game came in 1976. He died of a heart attack in Tulsa in 1983.
