1977 Topps #23 Dan Driessen

About Dan Driessen
With Tony Perez traded to Montreal, Driessen took over first base in 1977 and had the best year of his career. A 9-for-16 week in late April earned him National League Player of the Week honors, and he finished with 91 RBI and 31 stolen bases, the most by a major league first baseman in 50 years. His card is Topps #23.
Dan Driessen was a left-handed-hitting first baseman who spent 12 of his 15 major league seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, part of the Big Red Machine that won the 1975 and 1976 World Series. Raised on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, one of eight children, he signed with the Reds as an undrafted free agent in August 1969 after a Braves tryout cut him last. He debuted in June 1973, hit .301 as a rookie third baseman, and tied for third in Rookie of the Year voting. A walk-off three-run home run against the Padres in the 11th inning on June 27, 1975, was a highlight of a season in a reserve role. He was the Reds starting first baseman from 1977 to 1984 and led the National League with 93 walks in 1980. The Reds traded him to Montreal in July 1984; he finished with the Expos, Giants, Astros and Cardinals, reaching a third World Series with the 1987 Cardinals, and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 2012.
