About Doug Flynn

Through June 12 Flynn had appeared in 36 games, mostly as a late-inning replacement for Pete Rose at third, before the Seaver deal sent him to New York. He hit .197 in 126 games for both clubs, 69 of them at shortstop. On August 12 he fielded Mario Mendoza's grounder against Pittsburgh and flipped to Felix Millan, who punched Ed Ott after a hard slide; Ott body-slammed Millan, and Flynn temporarily replaced him at second. The #186 card carries the Reds.

Doug Flynn was a glove-first infielder who played 11 seasons, 1975 to 1985, for the Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos and Detroit Tigers. A Lexington, Kentucky native, he reached the Reds through an open tryout camp in Somerset in 1971 and signed as an amateur free agent. He was a utility man on Cincinnati's 1975 and 1976 World Series champions, then went to the Mets in the June 1977 trade that sent Tom Seaver to the Reds. Playing second base in New York, he won the 1980 National League Gold Glove with a .991 fielding percentage, only the third Met to win one. He hit .238 with 7 home runs in 1,309 games. The Mets traded him to Texas after 1981, and Montreal bought his contract in August 1982; he held its second base job through 1984 and finished with Detroit in 1985. After baseball he worked as a banking officer in Lexington and as a broadcaster.
