1977 Topps #582 Ed Kirkpatrick

About Ed Kirkpatrick
Kirkpatrick appeared at first base in 25 games and in the outfield in 9 for Pittsburgh in 1976. His 1977 Topps card, #582, kept the Pirates affiliation. On June 15, Pittsburgh traded him to Texas for Jim Fregosi; the Rangers then sent him to Milwaukee on August 20. Gorman Thomas was named on October 25 to complete the second trade.
Ed Kirkpatrick caught and played the outfield during 16 major league seasons, beginning with the Angels in 1962. He later played for Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Texas and Milwaukee, appearing in the National League Championship Series with the Pirates in 1974 and 1975. The left-handed hitter finished with 824 hits and a .238 average in 1,311 games. He hit 85 home runs and drove in 424 runs. His nickname, 'Spanky,' came from his resemblance to Little Rascals actor Spanky McFarland. A 1981 car accident left Kirkpatrick in a coma for five and a half months and caused lasting paralysis. He died of throat cancer in Mission Viejo, California, on November 15, 2010, at 66.
