1977 Topps #332 Elliott Maddox

About Elliott Maddox
Baltimore sent Paul Blair to the Yankees for Maddox and Rick Bladt on January 20, 1977. Gabe Paul had objected to the second knee operation Maddox chose in November, and a slow recovery kept him out until mid-July, when Orioles announcer Rex Barney mistakenly called him Lester Maddox. He hit .262 with 2 home runs and 9 RBI in 49 games, then filed for free agency. The #332 card pictures him with New York, ahead of that trade.
Elliott Maddox was a right-handed outfielder and third baseman who played 11 major league seasons, 1970 to 1980, for the Tigers, Senators, Rangers, Yankees, Orioles and Mets. He was a first-round pick of Detroit in the 1968 secondary draft after hitting .467 for Michigan, and in September 1970 he returned to Michigan for his senior year while still playing for the Tigers 40 miles away. His glove was the calling card: Ted Williams called him perhaps the best defensive center fielder in the American League, and in 1974 he led AL center fielders in assists and double plays. That same year he hit .303 for the Yankees and scored a career-high 75 runs. A fall on the wet Shea Stadium outfield on June 13, 1975 damaged his knee and led to two operations, and he later sued over the injury, losing at New York's highest court in 1985. He finished with a .261 average over 1,029 games. After baseball he became an investment banker, later a Yankees hitting instructor in 1990 and 1991, and in 2004 was inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
