About Randy Moffitt

Card #464 carries an uncorrected error in its 1976 line, which should read 58 games. In 1977 Moffitt pitched 64 games and saved 11. His 68 strikeouts in 87 2/3 innings were a career high. He went 4-9 with a 3.59 ERA, and the nine losses were also a career high.

Randy Moffitt was a right-handed reliever who spent ten of his twelve big-league seasons with the San Francisco Giants, 1972 through 1981, then pitched for Houston in 1982 and Toronto in 1983. A Long Beach native and the younger brother of tennis star Billie Jean King, he was the Giants' first-round pick, 18th overall, in 1970. After going 9-6 with a 1.60 ERA as a starter at Class-A Fresno, he was converted to relief at Triple-A Phoenix in 1971. He appeared in 534 games, all but one in relief, and saved 96 of them, with a 43-52 record and 3.65 ERA. He finished among the National League top ten in saves four times and in games pitched three times, and in the 1970s he formed the Giants bullpen first with Elias Sosa and later with Gary Lavelle. The Giants released him on August 4, 1981. He died in 2025.
