1977 Topps #483 Richie Zisk

About Richie Zisk
The Pirates sent Zisk and Silvio Martinez to the White Sox for Goose Gossage and Terry Forster on December 10, 1976, so card #483 still lists him with Pittsburgh. On the 1977 Southside Hitmen he had 19 home runs and 63 RBIs at the break. He started in left field for the American League in the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium on July 19 and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. The final tally was 30 home runs and 101 RBIs.
Richie Zisk was a right-handed outfielder and designated hitter who played 13 seasons for the Pirates, White Sox, Rangers and Mariners and finished with 207 home runs and a .287 average. A third-round Pittsburgh pick in 1967 out of Seton Hall, he waited years behind Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell and Al Oliver in the Pirates system; Clemente's death on December 31, 1972 opened the way to regular work. He played in the 1974 and 1975 NLCS, the only postseason series of his career, both lost by Pittsburgh. Traded to the White Sox, he left as a free agent for Texas, later moved to Seattle in an 11-player trade in December 1980, and was named The Sporting News AL Comeback Player of the Year in 1981. He was a two-time All-Star and retired after the 1983 season. He then worked in the Chicago Cubs organization as a minor league hitting instructor, Daytona Cubs hitting coach and manager, and Florida scout. Daytona retired his number 22 in 2007. He entered the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Florida State League Hall of Fame in 2014.
